Why the Surface Code Leads Quantum Error Correction—and What It Costs

The surface code is the leading quantum error correction strategy, balancing high error tolerance and local hardware requirements against a substantial physical qubit overhead. Understanding this trade-off is crucial for developing fault-tolerant quantum computers.
